Reader Review

“JP2000” from Irvine, Calif., seems to be one of the few readers who genuinely appreciate the polarizing design of the 2010 Acura TL. Up until this point, he had stacked up 15 years owning and driving German-designed cars. Before he bought the TL, JP2000 looked closely at buying the Audis, BMWs, Mercedes and Volkswagens he has grown accustomed to. Only the Volkswagen CC came close to consideration, but ultimately this reader bought the TL and has been “absolutely delighted” ever since. Continue reading to find out why. Once you’re done with that, you can write about your own review here.

“I applaud Acura for finally taking the lead with a fresh, bold design for the '09/'10 TL. The last-gen TL was a great car, but I didn't care much for its Plain Jane exterior styling. The new TL's styling, in contrast, is simply brilliant inside and out. The ride is remarkably quiet and controlled (even on rough roads), the steering is precise, and there is plenty of low-end torque.

“Inside, the large high-res navigation system with rearview camera, the keyless entry system, the dazzling sound of the HDD-based ELS system and the premium leather seats (all of which come with the Tech Package at a bargain price) bring the car's substance on par with its stunning looks. Now, add to this Acura's legendary reliability and resale value, and you have a car that’s second to none in its segment.

“In the last 15 years, I had only driven German cars. Before buying the TL, I took a close look at the Audi A4, BMW 535xi, VW CC VR6, MB C300 and Infiniti G37x. In this group, the only close contender for the TL (with the Tech Package) was the VW CC VR6, but only for those who can live with its two- seater rear arrangement! So, all things considered, my final analysis led me straight to the TL. And I'm absolutely delighted!”

Reader Review of the Week: 2010 Acura TL

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Reader Review “Disappointed Acura Owner” from Washington, D.C., has a few kind words for the 2010 Acura TL, but found it lacking overall. Read the full review to find out why the TL let this owner down, and why he thinks he’ll be trading it in for something else in the near future. There are plenty of competitive vehicles in this segment, including sport wagons that have more room. After getting the lowdown on the TL, write a review of your own car here.

“First, I give major kudos for the technology side of the car and cockpit feel. Having owned a 2005 TL, I was looking forward to upgrading to the all-wheel-drive TL with Tech.

“Disappointments:

“1) The shape of trunk opening: not very functional. The angled edges makes larger boxes difficult, if not impossible, to get in. it’s a serious let down for the exterior design.

“2) Rear seat pass-through only: Even the TSX has a 60/40-split folding rear seat for greater utility. I don't see why the TL can't have one, too. Most sedans in this class offer this either standard or at least as an option.

“3) Bucktooth beak: I can't take it anymore. The previous style was classy or at least not so extreme.

“I am looking forward to seeing how the 2011 TSX wagon looks and performs. If it is available in AWD V6 Tech package, I will be probably trade in the TL.

“Overall, if you need all-wheel drive and practical functionality combined with performance, I recommend waiting to compare the TSX wagon with some sport wagons or at least all-wheel-drive sedans that don't have the limitations mentioned above.

“Some possible options include the Cadillac CTS (and wagon), Infiniti G37, Audi A6 (and Avant), or BMW 5 Series (plus GT and wagon). It depends how much performance and function you need.

“But I am disappointed with the TL and will be trading it in.”

Recall Alert: 378,758 Honda Vehicles

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
2001HondaAccord

Honda has expanded an earlier recall for a faulty airbag inflator that could deploy with too much pressure. This is a serious defect that the company says has resulted in one fatality since the recall was announced in 2008; it was expanded again in July 2009. That fatality led the company to investigate more models and yesterday certain 2001-2002 Honda Accord, Civic, Odyssey, CR-V and 2002 Acura TL sedans were added to the recall. That brings the total number of vehicles being recalled to 826,424.

Honda says there have been 12 accidents, including the one fatality, due to the defect.

Honda will send out notifications to owners beginning this month; owners can bring their vehicles to dealers for repairs as soon as they receive the letter. Dealers will replace the airbag inflator for free. Owners may contact Honda at 800-999-1009 or the NHTSA vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236. Honda also has a recall website owners.honda.com/recalls.
