Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: August 2010

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Cash for Clunkers continues to cast a long shadow: Big automakers had what looks to be a bad month, but last year the popular government program dramatically boosted the sales of many models, including the Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Honda CR-V and Honda Accord. So the dramatic declines experienced by those models is not all too surprising.

Year-to-date, five of the models in the top 10 are selling less than they sold year-to-date in 2009. Before August, only one model on this list – the Dodge Ram – was selling worse in 2010 compared with 2009.

Toyota (down 31.4%), Honda (down 30%), Nissan (down 27%) and GM (down 24.9%) saw the most dramatic declines. Of course, Japanese automakers were the biggest gainers during Cash for Clunkers; GM’s decline is partly due to the strong sales gains by Pontiac and Chevrolet in August 2009. Chrysler saw a 7% increase because very few of its cars sold well during Cash for Clunkers.

The best selling full-size trucks — Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram — performed well this month, and they were the only models on the list (besides the Hyundai Sonata) to post positive gains. Honda remains the automaker with the most cars on the list with three models, the same as last month.

Recall Alert: 1998-2003 Ford Windstar

Friday, August 27th, 2010

2000FordWindstar

Ford is recalling 462,750 Windstar minivans from the 1998 to 2003 model years due to a rear axle that can fracture over time when exposed to corrosive materials used on roads in cold-weather areas.

The corrosion and stress can lead to cracks that can result in a “complete fracture” of the rear axle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If this happens while the van is driving, it could lead to a crash.

We found 10 complaints of completely cracked rear axles on NHTSA’s complaint website for just the 1998 model year. All were from 2009 or 2010, and a few mentioned mileage of 90,000 miles.

Ford will begin the recall on or before Sept. 27, and all service and parts will be covered free of charge if needed. Owners can contact Ford at 866-436-7332 or NHTSA’s hot line at 888-327-4236.

Ford’s Wi-Fi-Enabled Assembly Line

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Ford announced today that it is installing Wi-Fi access points at assembly lines for vehicles using the latest Sync systems. This allows the company to install the latest software to Sync-equipped vehicles on the line, without using hardware that would need physical maintenance.

Whenever the company updates Sync — which technically can be done throughout a model year’s life — the newest version will be zapped into the cars on the line. The first plant to use it is in Ontario, Canada, where the 2011 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX SUVs are assembled. The Chicago plant that will build the new Ford Explorer is next on the list.

Ford Fiesta Delayed Again

Ford Fiesta

The steady launch of the Ford Fiesta hit another snag last week as shipments that were en route to American dealerships were halted to inspect the quality of a part that did not meet the manufacturer's standards.

Nearly 6,800 Fiestas are being inspected for a third-party-produced part that Ford has declined to name. According to Reuters, two unnamed sources with knowledge of the stop-shipment order have said the affected part is a seat lever.

Nearly 2,300 of the Fiestas have been inspected and only 12 of those didn’t meet Ford’s specs, according to Ford spokesman Said Deep. The units that passed the inspection are now heading to dealer lots, with another 4,500 cars remaining to be inspected.

The issue was caught before any of the models were placed on dealer lots or in customers' hands, Deep said. Ford said it does not believe that any of the vehicles with potential defects had been sold to consumers.

The Fiesta has run into more than its fair share of logistics-related issues since the car went on sale in May. The Fiesta suffered delays after a hurricane prevented shipments of the subcompact. The Fiesta is produced at Ford’s Cuautitlan plant in Mexico. The hurricane and the part issue are not related despite both events cropping up so closely together, Deep said.

Buyers who’ve waited longer than a month for their Fiestas have been or will be issued a MasterCard gift card worth $50, according to The Detroit News. Ford has sold 4,377 Fiestas since the end of July, and another 6,500 to 7,000 are in transit to dealerships, according to Ford spokeswoman Angie Kozleski. Nearly 24,276 Fiestas have been produced so far for North America.

2011 Ford Fiesta Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Award

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

40 mph frontal offset test, 2011 Ford Fiesta
The 2011 Ford Fiesta won the honor of Top Safety Pick in the minicar category by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The award applies to the four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body styles.

To earn the award, a vehicle must receive the top rating of Good in front, side, rear and rollover crash tests. The vehicle also must have electronic stability control, which is standard on the Fiesta.

Measurements taken from the dummies used during the Fiesta’s testing show a low risk of significant injury in a 40 mph offset crash (pictured above).

The 2011 Fiesta is the only car in IIHS’ minicar category to be awarded a Top Safety Pick since the new roof-strength test took effect. Vehicles like the 2010 Honda Fit and 2010 Toyota Yaris perform well in front and side crash tests, but their Acceptable rating for rollover/roof strength prevents them from becoming Top Safety Picks. Vehicles like the 2010 Chevrolet Aveo received a Marginal rating in the rollover test. Poor is the lowest score on the four-tiered scale.

To pass IIHS’ roof-strength test, a vehicle’s roof must be able to withstand the force of four times the vehicle’s weight. The Fiesta sedan can withstand an outstanding 5.42 times its own weight and the hatchback 5.05 times.

The Top Safety Pick award applies only to Fiestas built after July 2010, after Ford made design changes to strengthen the outside door handles to reduce the chance of the doors opening in a side impact. Ford built 15,537 Fiestas before that change took place.

Ambient Lighting Makes Drivers Feel Safer

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

2010 Chyrsler Town & Country

Over the past few years, more and more vehicles are starting to offer ambient lighting as a standard or optional feature. Ambient lighting is the soft illumination around the center console, door handles and pulls, cupholders and sometimes completely across the dash and in the footwells.

Typically, ambient lighting is seen as a purely cosmetic feature, but it may also increase a driver’s perceived safety and quality of the car, according to a new study conducted by BMW and the Lighting Engineering Group at Ilmenau University of Technology in Germany.

Ambient lighting increases spatial perception, making the vehicle’s interior feel bigger at night, the study says. The lights may also decrease fatigue when driving at night, but the study had inconclusive evidence regarding ambient lighting’s effect on “alertness” or the ability to improve a driver’s mood or performance.

Moreover, drivers thought ambient lighting increased the perceived quality of materials and design. They also found controls easier to use.

Brightness of the ambient lighting system was a critical factor in the study. If the lights were too bright, drivers started to find the system distracting. Keeping illumination below 0.1 candelas per square meter will keep glares from forming on the plastics of the interior, which will reduce the possibility of distraction, previous studies have shown. In general, drivers want to be able to control the illumination levels, the study says.

The color used was reportedly not important in affecting the driver’s emotional state, but it was important in forming brand-specific identities.

Most automakers are taking the bait with GMC using a red lighting system, Chevrolet and Buick blue, BMW orange, Saab green and Mercedes yellow. Ford offers an ambient lighting system that lets you can choose from seven different colors, which isn’t great for brand marketing, but great for personal expression.

Ford to Give Fiesta Buyers $50 Gift Card for Delays

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

2011 Ford Fiesta

Because of shipping delays accompanying the 2011 Ford Fiesta, Ford says it has issued gift cards as a thank you/apology.

Buyers who’ve waited longer than a month for their Fiestas have been or will be issued a MasterCard gift card worth $50. Only buyers who already reserved and paid deposits on their Fiesta will get the card, so don't run out and expect one if you test-drive a Fiesta today.

The delay centers around a hurricane that hit Mexico, where the Fiesta is built, and it's preventing delivery of the new subcompact. The short supply and high demand have made the Fiesta one of the fastest sellers on our Movers and Losers list for July, taking only nine days to move off dealership lots.

Because of the demand and the hurricane, Ford’s dealers have less than one Fiesta on their lots on average, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. Ford has sold 4,377 Fiestas since the end of July, and another 6,500 to 7,000 are in transit to dealerships, according to Ford spokeswoman Angie Kozleski.

Ford Offers $7,500 Cash Back on 2010 F-150

2010f150

It’s one of those model year closeout deals that sound too good to be true when Mike Rowe is yapping about it for the 10th time during prime-time commercials. But this time, it’s an advertised $6,500 in cash back and $1,000 in bonus cash if you finance through Ford Credit.

Of course, there are hoops. Not every F-150 gets the full discount. For the full rebate price, you need to buy an XLT trim level, which starts at $25,505, and add the Sync/Chrome/Tow Package. That brings the total lowest price to get the discount to $26,945 before the cash back.

The deal is part of the company’s Year End Sales Event to clear out the 2010 models before the 2011s — with their new engines we previewed last week — hit lots. The deals expire Oct. 4.

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302: First Look

Friday, August 13th, 2010
Boss1

Is the new Mustang GT with its 412-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8 not enough for you, but the idea of a 540-hp Shelby GT500 is too daunting? Then you are the right person for Ford’s new 440-hp 2012 Boss 302.

The concept of special one-off performance Mustangs is an old one; the first Boss 302 debuted more than 40 years ago. The new Boss seems like a throwback in more ways than a unique paint job, though. Ford removed 11 pounds of sound-deadening material to bring more of the engine and exhaust noise into the cabin.

But that’s likely where the resemblance to an unrefined muscle car of yore ends.

The company used the BMW M3 as the benchmark for the Boss 302’s handling and overall performance. The company says the Boss can best the M3 on a racetrack like Laguna Seca in California. Ford also rolled out a track-ready version called the Boss 302 Laguna Seca that deletes the rear seats and adds racier aerodynamic bodywork.

However, most folks will want the street-oriented Boss 302, which still packs a ton of added performance from the GT. The 5.0-liter V-8 gets a new intake system and revised camshafts and is rated at 440 hp and 380 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission and upgraded clutch were also added.

Boss10

The exhaust system actually is a quad exhaust, with two of them specifically designed to achieve a certain sound while the two visible exhausts actually deal with most of the flowing exhaust. Yeah, you know these engineers had a lot of time on their hands.

Then there is the suspension system. Yes, the Boss is dropped 11 millimeters up front and gets stiffer suspension bushings as well as a larger rear stabilizer bar, but it also comes with fully adjustable shocks. This makes the Boss 302 a road-to-track-ready machine. The shocks can be adjusted with a screwdriver and are accessible from under the hood or from the trunk.

Lightweight, 19-inch, black alloy wheels with Pirelli PZero summer tires are standard. Rear wheels are wider in back at 9.5 inches, with 9 inches up front. The brakes have also been upgraded and cut 60-to-zero mph stopping distance by three feet compared with the GT.

Pricing and sale date haven’t been announced, but because it is a 2012 model year, it can’t go on sale until at least Jan. 1, 2011. If you need something to occupy your time until then, check out more photos below.
