Reader Review

“Bill” from the San Francisco bay area already has a pretty strong history with Teutonic transportation – his past vehicle was a 2002 Audi A4. This time, Bill wanted something low-maintenance but with the same level of refinement, so he bought a 2010 Volkswagen GTI. Can someone who expects Audi quality really be pleased with a plebian Volkswagen? Read the full review to find out how the GTI fares, then write your own review here

Volkswagen GTI

"I came from a 2002 Audi A4, and when deciding to purchase my next car, I still wanted the ‘German’ handling but didn't want to deal with the high maintenance costs of Audi parts. So the GTI seemed like a good fit.

In general the car has sporty handling and a very good power band for acceleration. And while my Audi had better fit and finish, its cousin doesn't do half bad. The exterior and interior exudes cool and trendy but not over-the-top flashy.

Overall, I would say if you're interested in a car that has good German handling but do not want to overpay (both in MSRP or maintenance) for a luxury car, you should consider the GTI.

Also as for EPA I get about 26 mpg for mixed mostly highway driving."

Reader Review of the Week: 2010 Volkswagen GTI

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Reader Review “Alex” from Springfield, Ill., recently bought a 2010 Volkswagen GTI, and while he’s not 100% down on the car, his list of complaints is long. After driving in the GTI for a while, Alex kept finding small things about the car that failed to live up to his expectations for a $30,000 car. Read Alex’s full review to find out where the GTI let him down and why he ultimately found it a disappointing purchase. Afterward, write your own review here.

“I'll start off by saying that the interior of my GTI is very nice and it handles reasonably. This about sums up the good side of the GTI.

“When I purchased my GTI it cost near $30k and came with everything except GPS. During the winter I tried out the heated seats, which were a nice feature. Unfortunately, the heat did not want to shut off. The seat eventually got hot enough that I had to stop the car on the side of the road. The problem was fixed under warranty.

“The plastic materials look nice but they make annoying squeaking sounds whenever I hit a bump. The worst of it came when my DSG transmission kept throwing me out of gear! I later found out that VW recalled all cars for faulty wiring in the DSG system.

“To top things off, the GTI requires premium fuel since it's turbocharged, but the GTI is not even close to being a performance car. In fact, for the money, the GTI falls way behind just about every competitor on the market.

“I would've given it three stars but the GTI's lack of reliability force me to rate it as a poor car.”

OK, we’re kidding. Editors Mike Hanley and Kelsey Mays didn’t actually pit these two high-performance trims against each other — they just talk about the pros and cons in this week’s podcast. Especially interesting is the fact that both the Jaguar XFR and VW GTI could be serviceable daily drivers.

All you need to whet your appetite for Cars.com reviewer Kelsey Mays’ review of the 2010 Volkswagen GTI is that at one point he compares the sport compact to a “grunge guitarist with a haircut and a Men’s Wearhouse suit.” Check out the full review to find out what that means, where the GTI stacks up against cars like the Mazdaspeed3 and Subaru WRX and why the GTI’s downfall may be a dual-clutch gearbox.

2010 Volkswagen GTI Video

It’s cold in Chicago this time of year, which is why Cars.com reviewer Joe Bruzek was happy to get out of the office and down south to Georgia, where he found time to get behind the wheel of a 2010 Volkswagen GTI. He was also happy with the power of the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and some of the interior touches that made it a pleasure to drive. Check out this video to see Bruzek and the GTI in action.
