Wednesday, August 25th, 2010Jaguar and Land Rover Riding High Under Tata
Wednesday, August 11th, 2010
It’s been more than two years since Ford sold off its Land Rover and Jaguar unit to Indian conglomerate Tata Motors. So far, the new parent couldn’t be happier.
In fact, you could say Tata – which just posted a net profit in the latest quarter compared to a net loss a year earlier – owes a lot of its current success to these two relatively small luxury carmakers.
Jaguar and Land Rover sales are soaring high – up 18% in the U.S. – with production up 59% globally in the latest quarter.
Much of Jaguar’s and Land Rover’s current success has to do with new models either completely or partially developed by Ford Motor Co. Ford’s leadership laid the groundwork for the designs of the popular Jaguar XK, XF and XJ. The same person that designed many popular Lincoln concepts at Ford, including the Lincoln Continental and Navicross, was also responsible for Land Rover’s LRX Concept, which is now going on sale nearly unaltered as the Range Rover Evoque.
Not too long ago, in the era of expensive gas, some believed there was no future for the Jaguar brand and dwindling prospects for Land Rover. Jaguar saw a 50% drop in sales from 2005 to 2008, as models went unchanged just as brands like Audi and Infiniti were undergoing product revivals. Land Rover sales were actually increasing during that time until the energy crisis of 2008 when sales fell 40%.
Back in 2008, Ford wasn’t doing too well itself, and it decided to offload the brands to Tata Motors for $2.3 billion. Keep in mind that Ford bought Jaguar for about $2.3 billion in 1989 and Land Rover for $2.96 billion in 2000. Without accounting for inflation, you can most certainly call that a fire sale.
The verdict is still out as to what a top-to-bottom-designed Jaguar or Land Rover under Tata’s leadership will look like. Most of the Land Rover lineup received refreshed interiors for 2009, and the new company will be responsible for the success or failure of the Evoque. As for Jaguar, Tata plans to expand the brand by possibly three models in the coming years, so we won’t have to wait too long to see what Tata leadership will bring in terms of new vehicles.
Jaguar, Land Rover May Expand Lineup
Thursday, August 5th, 2010
Jaguar and, to a lesser extent, Land Rover have been on a roll lately. Sales for Jaguar/Land Rover are up 46% for the year, and a lot of that growth has been at Jaguar, whose reengineered and redesigned 2010-11 XJ saw sales climb 608% in July and was the brand's best-selling model, usurping the XF.
Now, Tata Motors Chairman Ratan Tata (owner of Jaguar and Land Rover since 2008) says, in a press release, he's considering widening Jaguar’s lineup by adding an all-new entry-level sedan, a new roadster and a station wagon.
Jaguar's current roadster — the XK, which starts at $82,150 — is obviously pricey. Jaguar could design something smaller and more nimble. The wagon could either be a body-style extension of the XJ or XF, or it could end up being its own model entirely, akin to the Volvo XC70 or recent hatchback-like touring cars from BMW and Porsche — the 550 Gran Turismo and Panamera, respectively.
The entry-level sedan is an interesting proposal. With the demise of the X-Type, Jaguar hasn’t offered a model for less than around $50,000. A model in the $35,000-$45,000 range could allow the company to compete better with best-sellers from Audi, BMW and Lexus. However, the X-Type is widely regarded as one of the biggest flops in recent luxury car history. Execution of the new model would be very important to a new model's success.
Over at Land Rover, Tata says there will be a revamp and refresh of the entire lineup, starting with the all-new two-door Evoque (pictured above). No more information about specific model upgrades or timetables was given.
Jaguar Launches Free Maintenance Program for 2011
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010Jaguar does not want consumers avoiding its cars because of high maintenance costs, and in order to dispel that (completely fair) notion, it will introduce “Jaguar Platinum Coverage.”
The new program offers a five-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle warranty, free scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance. It will also include free replacement of parts for basic wear and tear, including oil changes, filters, brake pads, brake discs, brake fluids and wiper blade inserts. That's a big difference from Jaguar’s last free maintenance program where owners were asked to pay for replacement parts. Jaguar killed the program in 2006, presumably because customers didn’t like paying for new brake pads and wiper blades.
The new program will start with the 2011 XJ sedan, which is slated to hit dealerships in May. The XF sedan and XK coupe will follow suit when the 2011 models debut in June, according to the automaker.
Luxury Segment Changing, Not Slowing Down
Tuesday, April 6th, 2010Don't believe anyone who tells you the luxury-car market is dead. Despite the economy's struggle to get moving again, you only have to visit the New York International Auto Show to know there's plenty happening in this segment.
From SUVs and crossovers to wagons and sedans, the auto show played host to numerous luxury models including the U.S. debut of the redesigned 2011 Porsche Cayenne, 2011 BMW 5 Series and 2011 Volvo S60, which were joined by newcomers like the 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon and 2011 Lexus CT 200h hybrid.
The features and technology available in these and other luxury models will no doubt drum up interest among people shopping for their first luxury car, but it may well be social considerations that keep current luxury-car owners in the fold.
"It's awfully hard to leave luxury once you're in luxury," said Rebecca Lindland, director of industry research at IHS Global Insight. "You just get used to projecting a certain image and you're used to a certain look in your vehicle, a certain touch and feel.
"If you still have your job and you're OK with your mortgage and you are in premium [cars], it's just a lot easier to stay there … rather than explain to your friends why you're driving non-premium."
Even though the desire to remain in a luxury car may be strong, some automakers believe the definition of luxury is changing, and that spells opportunity.
"Luxury is no longer about being the most expensive, the most popular, the most opulent," said John Mendel, Acura executive vice president of sales, during the introduction of the brand's new TSX Sport Wagon. "It's about smart choices. We're starting to see a whole new attitude as luxury-car buyers are looking to make more intelligent, more relevant purchase decisions.
"At Acura, we've been studiously avoiding excess, refusing to build behemoth vehicles that exceed all practical needs. Because of our intelligent approach, we're now really in the sweet spot of this evolving market."
Audi, for one, has weathered the economic storm exceptionally well; the brand recently recorded its best first-quarter sales ever in the U.S. New models like the A5 coupe and Q5 crossover have helped, and it's also been buoyed by new technology like its TDI diesels.
"We have done quite well in these difficult times," said Loren Angelo, manager of marketing and advertising for Audi. "We're continuously demonstrating how Audi is a brand that is readdressing and redefining what the new luxury marketplace is for consumers" through technology features and engineering.
There's no question other brands have had some trying months. Sales for ultra-luxury purveyor Bentley, which showed its new $280,400 Continental Supersports convertible at the New York auto show, were down 39 percent worldwide last year.
"At the end of the day the biggest problem in this market category is confidence -- and lack of confidence -- and confidence has to come back," said Christophe Georges, Bentley Americas president and COO.
To know when it does, you'll only have to look to the car market.
"As Americans, I think that we tend to want to celebrate we've recovered from this. We've recovered from the worst recession," Lindland said. "We're getting back on our feet again, and cars have always been a way to express emotionally that success that we're feeling."
