2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302: First Look

Is the new Mustang GT with its 412-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8 not enough for you, but the idea of a 540-hp Shelby GT500 is too daunting? Then you are the right person for Ford’s new 440-hp 2012 Boss 302.

The concept of special one-off performance Mustangs is an old one; the first Boss 302 debuted more than 40 years ago. The new Boss seems like a throwback in more ways than a unique paint job, though. Ford removed 11 pounds of sound-deadening material to bring more of the engine and exhaust noise into the cabin.

But that’s likely where the resemblance to an unrefined muscle car of yore ends.

The company used the BMW M3 as the benchmark for the Boss 302’s handling and overall performance. The company says the Boss can best the M3 on a racetrack like Laguna Seca in California. Ford also rolled out a track-ready version called the Boss 302 Laguna Seca that deletes the rear seats and adds racier aerodynamic bodywork.

However, most folks will want the street-oriented Boss 302, which still packs a ton of added performance from the GT. The 5.0-liter V-8 gets a new intake system and revised camshafts and is rated at 440 hp and 380 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission and upgraded clutch were also added.

The exhaust system actually is a quad exhaust, with two of them specifically designed to achieve a certain sound while the two visible exhausts actually deal with most of the flowing exhaust. Yeah, you know these engineers had a lot of time on their hands.

Then there is the suspension system. Yes, the Boss is dropped 11 millimeters up front and gets stiffer suspension bushings as well as a larger rear stabilizer bar, but it also comes with fully adjustable shocks. This makes the Boss 302 a road-to-track-ready machine. The shocks can be adjusted with a screwdriver and are accessible from under the hood or from the trunk.

Lightweight, 19-inch, black alloy wheels with Pirelli PZero summer tires are standard. Rear wheels are wider in back at 9.5 inches, with 9 inches up front. The brakes have also been upgraded and cut 60-to-zero mph stopping distance by three feet compared with the GT.

Pricing and sale date haven’t been announced, but because it is a 2012 model year, it can’t go on sale until at least Jan. 1, 2011. If you need something to occupy your time until then, check out more photos below.

Cars.com Reviews the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500

2011 Ford Shelby GT500

Early this year, Ford unveiled a freshened 2011 Mustang with extensive mechanical upgrades — including a new engine — and interior and exterior aesthetic revisions. With that, we knew it was only a matter of time before Carroll Shelby’s eccentric hands transformed the conventional Blue Oval pony car into the thoroughbred 2011 Ford Shelby GT500. Cars.com editor Kelsey Mays explains how slightly better fuel economy and “admirable” ride comfort do not negate from the GT500’s blistering straight-line performance.

New Cars Increasingly Composed of Recycled Materials

Recycled Car

We all know recycling is good for the planet. Melting down old soda bottles to make new ones reduces what goes into landfills and the amount of oil used to make many plastics. What may surprise you is that your old Coke bottle may be a part of your new car.

According to the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers, 9 percent of all recycled milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles and other high-density polyethylenes ended up in cars in 2008.

Those recycled jugs and bottles can be used for the plastic wheel-arch liners and battery trays in cars. Not incidentally, the Ford Focus uses 100% recycled material for these components, according to Debbie Mielewski, technical leader of plastics research at the automaker. GM uses recycled materials to make some sound-deadening materials for the Buick LaCrosse and the door-handle brackets and engine fan components on other GM vehicles.

These recycled materials can even be used to make the soft fabric-like materials inside your automobile, including the suede-looking fabrics, which is composed of plastic yarn made from old soda bottles, in the new Ford Taurus SHO and Lincoln MKZ.

Using recycled scrap material can even be more eco-friendly than using bio-materials, which come from organic substances, such as the soy oil Ford uses in the Escape and Mustang to build its seat cushions, seatbacks and headliners.

There are still challenges with using recycled materials. Mielewski said Ford hasn’t figured out a way to remove the milk odor from old milk jugs, so recycled plastic made from milk jugs can’t be used in the interior.

GM estimates that 5 to 10% of the plastics used in its vehicles are recycled, while Ford claims to have recycled 25 to 30 million pounds of plastic that would otherwise have ended up in landfills for 2008.

This Week’s Most-Read Stories

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Our hottest story this week is fittingly our muscle car hot spot post, where we pinpoint the locations of greatest Cars.com search interest for the Chevy Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang. Nothing generates better buzz than giving away a new car, so we’re not surprised to see the Ford Explorer give away story at No. 2. The Honda Civic is the second best-selling compact car in America, so the traffic to our latest Civic review comes as no surprise. Rounding out the top five are an iPod connectivity comparison between three subcompacts and a three-way comparison between fuel-smart econoboxes. Check out our most read stories below.

Ford Adding Cash Back to 0% Financing on 2010s

Thursday, July 8th, 2010
Fordincentives

Ford’s 2011s are rolling into dealer showrooms and that means the 2010s are going to get some better incentives to make room for the new arrivals. Ford is offering 0% financing plus $1,000 cash back on many 2010 models, including the Mustang and Focus. While the promotion on Ford’s consumer website also features the 2010 Taurus in this deal, it didn’t show up in all of the regions we searched. In Florida, for example, the 2010 Taurus' incentive is 0% financing for 36 months plus $500 cash back, but in Southern California you could get the full $1,000 on top of 0% financing for 36 months.

Make sure you research the incentives on Ford’s site before heading to a dealer. The deals are good through Sept. 7; the Transit Connect, hybrids, Taurus SE, Edge SE AWD and Mustang Shelby GT500 are excluded from these incentives.

Cars.com’s Muscle Car Hot Spots

Thursday, July 1st, 2010
As the country prepares for a lot of holiday travel and parades this Fourth of July, there may be a few more sightings of classic muscle cars than usual. The rebirth of three of those classics has garnered a lot of interest among Cars.com users for the past few years.

To celebrate Independence Day, we’ve crunched the numbers and found the towns most interested in the new Chevy Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang.

Using the map above, you can hover over any circle to get the town’s name and the percentage of searches for a particular muscle car. This percentage is the amount of searches above the Cars.com average search, which is why large cities are less prevalent on this map.

It also means that towns like Ponca City, Okla., are crazy for the Dodge Challenger, searching for the car 1,840% more than other cars.

With more model years on the road, we expected the Ford Mustang to garner more interest than the other muscle cars. While it does get the most love out of the three — topping out at 1,894% in Hutchinson Minn. — most places on the map are a one muscle car kind of town.

You can click on each car’s name at the bottom left-hand corner of the map to bring up just that model’s cities, or click “Pick a Muscle Car” to view all three at once.

*This map uses Cars.com search data from May 2009 through May 2010 and compares it to the national average search traffic during that timeframe. To make it onto the map, there needs to be a minimum number of searches for the particular model in the same timeframe.

2011 Ford Mustang Goes 776 Miles on One Tank

Thursday, June 24th, 2010
Mustang_by_Paul_Webb

The 2011 Ford Mustang is the first car with more than 300 horsepower to get over 30 mpg on the highway, and a Ford team recently proved it can do even better: It stretched one 16-gallon tank of gas to 776.5 miles.

If you’re not a mathematician, that’s 48.5 mpg, which rivals numbers put up by today’s most efficient hybrids like the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius.

There’s an important caveat to that number, though. The drivers were cruising around the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee at a limp 43.9 mph average speed. The Ford team originally wanted to see if the Mustang could get 1,000 laps (a total of 533 miles) but blew past that mark with the tank still a quarter full.

The driving team included Tom Barnes, Jonathan Mehl, Carl Ek, David Ragan and Seong Park, who took one-hour turns behind the wheel over the course of the 17 hours it took for the Mustang’s tank to run dry.
